Bioenvironmental Engineering
Bioenvironmental Engineering at the 23rd Medical Group ensures a healthy and safe workplace environment for Moody Air Force Base personnel and their families, via operational health risk assessment expertise. We conduct our mission through four avenues:
Industrial Hygiene
Anticipates, recognizes, and evaluates work-related health risks and recommends controls to mitigate hazards.
Readiness Plans & Operations
Provides chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear emergency response services through surveillance, risk assessment, decision support, and protective measure recommendations.
Environmental Health
Monitored through sampling and/or interpretation of environmental, non-industrial sources, such as potable water, asbestos, and indoor air quality.
The Radiation/Nuclear Health & Safety Program
Monitors and provides proper work conditions and hazard mitigation for all radiation producing equipment, radioactive sources, and non-ionizing radiation sources on the installation.
Protective Mask Fit Testing
Protective mask fit tests are performed
by appointment only.
Protective mask fit test scheduling: Schedule your fit test through your Unit Deployment Manager or by calling 229-257-4747.
Tests are scheduled for every Thursday, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Don’t eat, drink (besides water), or consume any tobacco products at least 30 minutes before coming to your fit test. This includes candy, gum, etc.
Protective mask fit test frequency requirements have changed. If you answer "yes" to any of the following questions, or you’ve never had a protective mask fit test, you need one.
To determine if you need a fit test, answer the following:
- Is your current fit test for a different mask than the one issued at Moody AFB (i.e., MCU-2P vs. M-50)?
- Have you gained or lost 10% of your body weight since your last fit test?
- Have you experienced extensive dental work, facial surgery, scarring, or disfigurement?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above, or you’ve never had a protective mask fit test, you need one.
If you
don’t need a new protective mask fit test and have one from a previous base, please get a copy from your UDM.
Frequency Needed
IAW DAFI 48-137, a protective mask quantitative fit test is only required once per lifetime, upon arrival at the first permanent duty station, or upon assignment to a unit type code. A fit test will be done if a new size or type of mask is issued, the wearer gains or loses 10% or more of body weight following completion of the initial fit test, or the wearer experiences extensive dental work, facial surgery, scarring, or disfigurement.
Record Keeping
BE doesn’t keep or provide old copies of previous fit tests. The service member will be given three copies of their test: one for themselves, one to place in the mask carrier, and one for the UDM. We recommend the service member upload a copy into AEF Online.
Industrial Respiratory Protection Fit Testing
Respirators may be required in some industrial shops or for certain emergency response personnel. Check with your shop supervisor if you’re unsure if this applies.
If you wore a respirator at your previous assignment, you’ll need to fill out a medical questionnaire and have a fit test before respirator use at Moody AFB.
Conditions Before Scheduling
If you’re required to wear a respirator, get a medical questionnaire and Workplace Specific Written Respiratory Protection Plan from your shop supervisor.
Fill out the questionnaire and take both documents to the active duty Flight Medicine clinic; please let staff know if you have a shaving waiver.
If cleared by the active duty Flight Medicine clinic, schedule an appointment with Bioenvironmental Engineering for a QNFT.
Respirator fit tests are performed
by appointment only.
Respirator fit test scheduling: Schedule your respirator fit test through your shop’s Respiratory Protection Manager or by calling 229-257-4747.
Respirator fit tests are scheduled on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Don’t eat, drink, or smoke anything for 30 minutes before coming to your fit test. This includes candy, gum, etc.
